Defender Joshua Kimmich is set to commit his long-term future to Bayern Munich.

The versatile 22-year-old has agreed a contract extension to 2023, according to Kicker. An announcement is expected early in 2018.

Kimmich, whose current deal ends in 2020, has gone from strength to strength this season since the retirement of Bayern legend Philipp Lahm.

That form has also been on display with the national team: until a November friendly against France, Kimmich had not missed a single minute of Germany’s last 24 games.

With eight assists, he created more goals than any other player in UEFA’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

That ability to forge chances is evident at club level too, where Kimmich has 10 assists in all competitions this season despite playing exclusively as a right-back.

The new contract is a huge statement from Bayern, who have a number of older players approaching the end of their careers. Kimmich had previously been linked with a move to Manchester City.
