Manchester United forward Anthony Martial appears to have won his battle to leave the club.

The 22-year-old is determined to escape Old Trafford following two disappointing seasons under José Mourinho. Since the Portuguese arrived, Martial has started less than half the club’s Premier League games.

Reports over the weekend said United were willing to trigger a one-year extension in Martial’s contract, keeping him tied to the club until 2020. Now, though, the Times and the Guardian say he will be allowed to leave for a club outside of England.

The fee remains a stumbling block, with Manchester United hoping to receive at least €65m on the Frenchman.

Juventus – who have previously shown their interest – may be reluctant to cough up such a sum following the €105m arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo. Bayern Munich have also been linked but a deal would smash their current club transfer record, which is currently the €41.5m paid for Corentin Tolisso last summer.

However, the Times believe one way to get a deal done would be to include a player. Manchester United were linked with Bayern midfielder Arturo Vidal last summer and have reportedly made tentative approaches to sign Jérôme Boateng. New Bayern Munich head coach Nico Kovač is happy for either player to leave and they are being actively offered around Europe.

Bayern’s asking price for Vidal is €30m, while it is at least €50m for Boateng.

Swap deals are rare and complicated but Manchester United reached an agreement with Arsenal that saw them sign Alexis Sánchez and send Henrikh Mkhitaryan the other way.
