Bayern Munich chief-executive Karl-Heinz Rummenige has accused Hoffenheim of ‘Wild West’ tactics following Friday night’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory.

Despite victory, the German champions have lost Kingsley Coman for several weeks through injury following a nasty challenge by Nico Schulz while the visitors’ foul count was 21.

Rummenige was unimpressed by Hoffenheim’s robust approach and said: “Especially in the first half, the Hoffenheim players have started brutally hard.

“Thiago, Coman and Franck Ribéry were constantly fouled with the goal of interrupting our flow of the game. That was football in the Wild West style.”

“When the result is the best player on the pitch has to be subbed off injured, all I can say is: the end can’t always justify the means. This over-the-top roughness has nothing to do with courage.”

Hoffenheim boss Julian Nagelsmann had said of the game: “You have to play by any means. We did not want to hurt a player,” though Rummenigge responded; “If comments from Hoffenheim manager Alexander Rosen and Julian Nagelsmann cause a squad to blow against our players, as happened yesterday, then fair play has nothing to do with it.”

Bayern travel to Stuttgart next Saturday for their second Bundesliga fixture of the campaign.
