A handful of clubs around the world have started to ask players and managers to start staying pay cuts in order to alleviate the lost revenue due to the Covid-19 outbreak.

Scottish club Hearts captured media attention as captain Steven Naismith agreed to a 50 per cent slash in his wages while manager Daniel Stendel agreed to waive his wages completely.

Though it’s mainly been smaller clubs, such as National League side Yeovil Town and League One outfit Peterborough United, to ask players to sacrifice wages to help their bottom line, Barcelona have now had discussions with club captains over a possible reduction of player salaries.

Barcelona said in a statement: “This crisis has had a negative impact on the football industry and sport in general. The club has to look at all possible scenarios and analyse the situation so as to minimise the economic consequences.”

However, an agreement with players will likely not be reached with players until more updates are known, as Barcelona would only lose money should LaLiga and the Champions League not be completed.

According to reports out of Spain, Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Gerard Piqué, and Sergi Roberto have already agreed to pay cuts if necessary.

Borussia Mönchengladbach players have already pledged to give up €1m worth of combined wages, while FC Sion in Switzerland terminated nine players for refusing to sacrifice part of their salaries.
