Barcelona were always the favourites going into the Copa del Rey final, but it was surprising just how easy Sevilla made it for them.

Ernesto Valverde picked a strong side from the off with Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez and Philippe Coutinho all starting, and it was those three who caused the damage.

It took just 14 minutes for Barça to score the opening goal, with Coutinho latching onto a goal-kick from Jesper Cillessen before squaring it to Suárez for an easy tap in.

In the 18th minute, Joaquin Correa had a good chance to level the scores but fluffed his lines from close range. That was as good as it got for Vincenzo Montella’s men.

Andres Iniesta hit the bar with a left footed strike – via a deflection off Messi – and just two minutes later the Argentine got his goal after a clever backheel from Jordi Alba.

Just before half-time, Suárez added a third after some brilliant interplay with Messi, before finishing cooly past helpless goalkeeper David Soria.

China bound Iniesta made it a night to remember by adding the fourth, latching onto another perfect pass from Messi to round the ‘keeper and slot home.

Coutinho was impressive throughout and it wasn’t long before he made it five, making no mistake from twelve yards after Clément Lenglet was adjudged to have handled the ball.

Messi makes more history, Iniesta says farewell and Barça win their 30th Copa del Rey – a perfect night all round. For Sevilla and Montella, however, it’s back to the drawing board.
