Club América manager Miguel Herrera rotated his squad for the mid-week Copa MX match but was still expected to earn a result on the road.

Atlético San Luis surprised many by forcing mistakes from the largely experienced azulcrema defence and capitalising on those errors.

To underline that trend, Mexico youth international defender Carlos Alonso Vargas was credited with an own goal in the first half and Leandro Torres created a turnover that resulted in a goal in the second half.

After some deliberation among the match officials, the goal awarded to San Luis in the 28th minute will go down as an own goal from the 19-year-old América defender Vargas.

A cross from the left wing leaked through to Atlético midfielder Orlando Sánchez whose shot deflected off Vargas to bounce past goalkeeper Agustín Marchesín.

Diego Pineda added to the home side’s lead seven minutes after the intermission.

23-year-old forward who had spent significant time developing in América’s system scored for San Luis in the 52nd minute.

Attacking midfielder Leandro Torres pressured Emanuel Aguilera on the end-line and was able to set up Pineda inside the six-yard-box. Even though Pineda slipped initially, he was still able to find the back of the net and secure victory for the home side.

If they had won on Wednesday night, América could have clinched an early place in the knock-out round of the Copa MX. Ascenso MX club FC Juárez did just that on Tuesday evening by winning their third group stage match.

Unfortunately for the azulcrema faithful, they’ll have to wait until América’s final match against Necaxa on 5 February to shore up their chances.

The result marks the first victory for Atlético San Luis in this edition of the competition. They now have three points after three matches in Group D of Copa MX play.

Club América retain first place in the three-team group and they and San Luis will each face Necaxa in the remaining two matchdays.
