Just as many other clubs have done around the world, Atlético Madrid players and technical staff will accept a salary reduction to ensure that club staff will be paid and the financial situation of the club will remain stable.

With Spain currently the country fourth-most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in terms of population, Atlético Madrid president Enrique Cerezo claims his players will step up to the plate in this uncertain time.

“Our players are conscious of the situation,” he stated. “I don’t think that there will be any problem on their part, or the part of the coach or the technical staff because they will always rise to the occasion.”

Cerezo also denied that Atlético did anything wrong by leaving to attend Anfield to face Liverpool in the return leg of their Champions League round-of-16 tie.

The trip drew criticism all around the world as 3,000 Atlético fans travelled to England despite Spain already pondering a complete lockdown.

“We went to Liverpool because we had to play there and it wasn’t called off, we had the obligation to play,” Cerezo said on Thursday.

“If they had told us that we shouldn’t have gone, we wouldn’t have gone.”

Of course, Atlético Madrid had one of their most famous nights, winning 3-2 in extra-time to send the defending Champions League title-winners out of the competition.
