Xolos were not an adventurous side in their match at Jalisco Stadium but did enough to earn all three points against Atlas.

Argentine manager Ángel Guillermo Hoyos was presented earlier this week as the new boss for Atlas. The Guadalajara club did not enjoy any honeymoon period with their new manager, though, as Atlas fell at home to Tijuana.

Tijuana manager Diego Cocca saw his team reduced to 10 players when Juan Carlos Valenzuela was sent off in the 14th minute.

Rather than capitalizing on their numerical advantage, the home side earned a dismissal of their own. Chilean midfielder Lorenzo Reyes got his marching orders in the 38th minute.

Despite both teams playing down, neither side could exploit the extra space on the field from the run of play.

Full-back Luis Fernando Fuentes scored the game’s only goal in the 56th minute from Ignacio Rivero’s corner kick.

The road win moves Tijuana up to 13th place in Liga MX with 12 points after Matchday 9. Three points on Sunday alleviates any anxiety of facing upcoming matches without their veteran centre back Valenzuela.

Atlas, on the other hand, are stuck in the mud; the Rojinegros have been in dead-last through all of the 2018 Apertura. Hiring a new coach did not solve the team’s troubles in one fell swoop but Hoyos should improve on Atlas’s points total, currently at two, as his tenure continues.
