The Campeones Cup was first played last season, with 2018 Campeón de Campeones winners Tigres defeating 2017 MLS Cup champions Toronto FC 3-1.

However, the match received much criticism for being played at the end of September when both sides were in the middle of an important run of games.

Atlanta United are coming off their first MLS title in only their second year in existence and are currently in fourth place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
