After a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday, Aston Villa’s manager Dean Smith did not hold back when speaking about goalkeeper Tom Heaton.

Heaton, who arrived over the summer from Burnley, had an uphill battle from early on when the 33-year-old rushed off his line and brought down Callum Wilson, with Joshua King scoring from the spot.

“It was the first minute of the game and we gave a needless penalty away,” said Smith.

“Tom comes out and does something he would never do normally. That puts you on the back foot straight away.”

The £8m summer signing has already conceded five goals in just two games for Villa.

“Mistakes happen in almost every game,” added Smith. “You’ll see all the goals from today and a lot of them will come from mistakes.”

Villa return to action on Friday as they take on Everton in Premier League play.
