Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has pinpointed where Chelsea failed during their 3-0 defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

Frank Lampard’s team have an uphill task to overcome if they are to progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

A brace from Serge Gnabry and a Robert Lewandowski tap-in secured a stunning victory for the Bundesliga leaders.

Wenger, who now works for FIFA as head of their football development activities, explained where Lampard got it wrong at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking on beIN Sports as a pundit, Wenger stated: “You don’t lose five home games if your team is superior to every other team.

“At that level, to give possession away, you’re punished at some stage because they make you run too much, and you cannot survive for 90 minutes.

“In the Champions League, if you lose the midfield battle you’re in trouble, it’s rule number one.

“Because you play against good teams, if they can feed the strikers you, at some stage, will pay for it.”

The two sides reconvene at the Allianz Arena for the second leg on March 18.
