Arsenal and Liverpool are both set to miss out on Max Meyer – with Hoffenheim close to completing a deal for the free agent.

Meyer is out of contract at Schalke this summer and has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, but will turn down other options in favour of staying in Germany.

The Gunners were hoping Bundesliga expert and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat could edge them ahead in negotiations but their chances now seem slim.

The Reds and Barcelona were also interested in Meyer, who was suspended from training towards the end of the season.

But according to Leipziger Volkszeitung, the 22-year-old has already agreed a deal to play under Julian Nagelsmann.

Hoffenheim finished third in the Bundesliga to qualify for the Champions League – last year they were beaten into the group stages by Liverpool.

Meyer had previously insisted his decision to quit Schalke was not financially driven.

“I simply did not want to stay in Schalke and work under Mr Heidel. That’s it. In the end, it just feels like I’m being bullied.

“I did not want to come out and talk. I’ve only had enough of always reading something about myself, I just want a change.”
