Reiss Nelson scored for Arsenal as they needed penalties to beat French side Angers on Wednesday.
Despite naming an exciting young side, Arsenal were second best for most of the first half with Angers exploiting their high line.
And it took just 13 minutes for the opening goal after Farid El Melali got in behind Zech Medley, before rounding Emi MartĂnez and finishing well.
Smart play from Eddie Nketiah nearly brought an equaliser, while Gabriel Martinelli was unlucky not to score after firing a smart header wide.
Unai Emery made five changes at the break in a bid to take the game to Angers, however, and Arsenal soon equalised.
Clever play from Mattéo Guendouzi and Martinelli saw Nketiah go close again, only for Nelson to tuck home the loose rebound.
Late on, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a goal ruled out for offside, before somehow firing over from close range when it looked easier to score.
The game was then decided by a penalty shoot-out.
Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock, Granit Xhaka and Aubameyang all converted from the spot, before Wilfried Kanga for Angers and Mkhitaryan both skied from 12 yards.
Former Gunner Reine-AdelaĂŻde had to score, but Martinez dived to his right to keep out his effort and secure the victory.
