Argentina got off to a very disappointing start in the 2019 U-20 South American Championship on Sunday, drawing Paraguay 1-1 despite dominating the match and owning a superior advantage in every statistic except goals.

PSV Eindhoven striker Maxi Romero scored the opening goal at the half-hour mark, however, Marcelino Ñamandú provided the all-important equaliser in first-half stoppage time.

After the match, U-20 boss Fernando Batista was optimistic about the rest of the tournament going forward.

“I believe in the last 20 minutes we had very clear chances and Paraguay’s goalkeeper did well.

“In general, I think the kids had a very good match. I always wish that things will get better.

“This was our team’s first official match. The anxiousness and nervousness is normal. I leave calm because I have good players.”

Though Argentina started with a draw, they can temporarily go to the top of the table in Group B (Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, Paraguay) with a win over Ecuador on Tuesday.

The top three teams from each group will advance to the final stage, a round-robin tournament to decide which four teams from CONMEBOL will advance to the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
