In one of the more shocking results of the season, Corinthians fell to Ecuadorian side Independiente del Valle 2-0 at home in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana semi-finals on Wednesday.

Though Corinthians have mightily improved this season and are currently sitting fifth in the Brasileirão table, president Andrés Sanchez was forced to defend manager Fábio Carille when a member of the press asked if his job was at risk.

“This is the big problem of the Brazilian press, the Brazilian leader, the Brazilian fan. You lose one, two games and you have to send a coach away, you have to send a president away and that is not how you play football.

“Today they exposed themselves, but no one will be firing Carille, no. When he wins, he is good, when he loses it cannot be so bad either.”

Corinthians will have a week to turn it around as they will travel to Ecuador to play the second leg on Wednesday after Saturday’s home match against Bahia.
