América opened their Clausura 2020 campaign with a 1-0 win over Tigres UANL on Saturday after manager Miguel Herrera had opted to name nine Mexicans in the starting line-up.

It is the third time the Azulcrema has gone with such a strong native presence from the kick-off.

The previous occasions were during the Clausura 2003 and the Clausura 2004 campaigns.

Guillermo Ochoa, Paul Aguilar, Luis Fuentes, Haret Ortega, Jorge Sánchez, Rubén González, Alonso Escoboza, Giovani dos Santos and Henry Martín were the nine players born in Mexico.

Dos Santos and Martín combined in the 68th minute to give Las Águilas the winning goal against a Tigres side missing French striker André-Pierre Gignac.

The former performed a lovely turn in midfield before laying a perfect ball into Martín’s path and the forward slid the ball home with unerring accuracy.
