Álvaro Morata is under no illusions about Spain’s chances of international success.

While the striker is determined to help his country win trophies, he has admitted that trying to replace one of the most successful generations in the history of international football is a burden.

“We are here following a generation that won everything,” Morata told reporters on Thursday.

“That is not easy.

“Sometimes football isn’t fair!

“We have good players and a lot of work to try to put Spain back on track. Our dream is to win a title with Spain.”

From 2008-12, Spain dominated the international landscape. After winning the European Championships in 2008, the team went on to win the 2010 World Cup before retaining their European crown two years later.

Now, two disappointing World Cups on, the pressure is on to restore Spain as one of the world’s leading lights.

“We wanted to be in the Nations League (finals) and now we have an important challenge, to qualify for the Euros,” Morata said.

“The important thing starts now and we have to qualify as soon as possible.

“The coach asks for hard work and the ones who train well play. [Luis Enrique] wants to make Spain champions again.”
