Alexander Nübel would not have joined Bayern Munich without guarantees over game time, according to his agent.
Nübel has just six months left on his Schalke contract and signed a pre-contract agreement with the Bundesliga champions, joining them on July 1.
But this decision has drawn criticism from various quarters including Germany manager Joachim Löw, who struggled to see sense in the move.
“If it had been about money, Alex would have had to go abroad,” Stefan Backs told AZ.
“There were several offers where money was not an issue. Bayern’s offer was actually in the lower range.
“It should be obvious to everyone that Bayern presented a solid plan about game time; otherwise Alex would not have agreed.”
