Thierry Henry’s playing instinct cost him his first coaching job, according to Monaco midfielder Aleksandr Golovin.

The 22-year-old was part of the squad who had Henry in charge for a total of 104 days before his sacking.

Henry’s struggle to come to terms with his new role in the dugout was quickly noticeable for Golovin and co.

In a YouTube interview, he explained how the Frenchman’s anxiety ultimately led to his exit.

“Maybe he didn’t manage to get rid of the part of the player still inside him,” explained Golovin.

“When things didn’t work in training, he’d get nervous and yell a lot, which was unnecessary.

“He was a very good player but he’d try to go out on the field and show us how to train and then shout.

“He’d get nervous right away and run onto the field trying to show us things, screaming ‘try to get the ball off me’.

“Mostly the players were calm but maybe there was some shock. He hadn’t fully transitioned to the role of coach.

“There were times he’d feel hurt and not to talk to us for hours, just reviewing tactics instead.”

Henry picked up just two Ligue 1 victories in charge before being sacked in January.
