Just days after waking up from a coma, Ajax have officially terminated Abdelhak Nouri’s original contract, which they had been paying in full.

Nouri suffered from cardiac arrest during a pre-season friendly against Werder Bremen in 2017 and went into a coma for the next 33 months.

Nouri, who turns 23 on Thursday, was also left with permanent brain damage following the catastrophic incident.

Ajax and Nouri had pre-agreed to a one-year contract extension as his contract was set to expire this summer. However, they will not follow through with the deal.

Instead, after admitting that their immediate medical treatment for Nouri was ‘inadequate’, Ajax and Nouri’s family are working on a settlement rumoured to be in the range of €5m.

The timing of the announcement has little to do with Nouri having woken up from his coma, as Dutch clubs had to announce by 1 April which expiring contracts they were going to terminate.

If a player’s contract is not terminated, their existing contract is automatically extended by a further year.
