After the end of the 2016 Clausura season, Agustín Marchesín was given the option of leaving Santos Laguna to join either Boca Juniors or América.

Marchesín ultimately chose América and has since solidified himself as one of Liga MX’s best, earning a place in Argentina’s Copa America squad.

“I was fine in Mexico. When I left Santos, the possibility was given and I chose América because it was a jump for my career.

“I didn’t think it was the time to return to Argentine soccer.”

Marchesín made well over 200 appearances with Lanús from 2009 to 2014, winning a pair of Copa Sudamericana titles.

In the same interview, the 31-year-old made it clear that if he were to return to Argentina, Lanús is the only club on his mind.

“If I have to come back one day and I have to choose, I choose Lanús. It’s the club that gave me everything.

“I know I’m not a major national player that the Boca fan really cares about, but for Lanús I know it would be a hard blow to go to Boca.

“I would choose them for everything I want in a club.”

Marchesín is currently contracted to América until the end of 2023.
