No, you did not read that headline wrong.
Maybe the calm presence of Sam Allardyce, who was named as the new Everton manager earlier in the day, was all Wayne Rooney needed.
Rooney — yes, that one — scored an absolutely magnificent goal to give him three for the evening in Everton’s Premier League match against West Ham on Wednesday.
It was a moment of perfect technique, with Rooney catching the ball with such precision that it arrowed past Joe Hart, who had come off his line, and into the net.
The goal is right up there with other jaw-droppers from Rooney over the course of his career.
It means he now has seven Premier League goals for Everton this season — two more than he had for Manchester United during the entirety of last season.
Rooney may not be as great as he once was (in fact, he certainly isn’t) but he showed on Wednesday that there is life in the old dog yet.
