3️⃣ points as Saints lose to Burnley despite more Ings heroics

A brilliant first half Danny Ings goal wasn’t enough for Southampton as they went down 2-1 to Burnley.

A bizarre goal from Ashley Westwood  gave the Clarets a lead before Matej Vydra’s wonder strike in the second period ensured Sean Dyche’s men came away from the south coast with all three points.

Turning back the clock

For a long time we’ve filed Matej Vydra alongside Dwight Gayle, Charlie Austin and Che Adams.

That is, those strikers that are too good for the Championship but not quite good enough for the Premier League.

And although we might need a few more performances like this one to fully change our minds, for a brief moment here in the second half, Vydra was a mixture of Samuel Eto’o and Thierry Henry.

It was his stunning strike that won this game and ended a run of 18 months without a goal for Burnley.

And what a way to do it.

An Olympic goal

1:33.

That’s all it took for Burnley to take the lead here at St Mary’s and it was one of the strangest goals you’ll likely see in the Premier League this season.

A corner by Ashley Westwood was slightly under-hit, but front post man Danny Ings heard a call from his goalkeeper, let the ball roll past his body and squirm in at the near post.

It was a calamitous start for the south coast side and turned Ings from hero to villain and saw Westwood join the ‘Olympic Goal’ club – that is people who have scored directly from a corner.

On an otherwise stodgy, uninspired afternoon this was a brief moment of joy on the south coast.

Oh Danny boy

When you’re hot, you’re hot. And right now there’s no one hotter than Danny Ings.

The 27-year-old was at fault for Burnley’s opening goal after just two minutes but it says something about his mental fortitude that he brushed off that rick to fire home the Saints opener just 15 minutes later.

Ings has been in stunning form all season long and will surely earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad next month, and as this stat from Opta showed, the former Liverpool man is adding new strings to his bow all the time.

Sensational.
