Defensive frailties remain

What eventually became the downfall of Unai Emery was Arsenal’s shambolic defensive record.

But as with most new managers, Freddie Ljungberg offered a clean slate, bringing Shkodran Mustafi, Granit Xhaka and Sead Kolašinac back in the side.

All they did was justify their previous exclusions.

Mustafi was guilty of backing off for both Norwich goals, while Xhaka did Xhaka things – committing needless fouls and failing to cover ground.

This side are desperately lacking athleticism which leads to a vulnerable centre. That issue shows no sign of changing.

We need to talk about Pépé

With Bayern Munich and Napoli courting his signature, Arsenal securing a club-record deal for Nicolas Pépé was meant to be a game changer.

But after a slow start with just three goals and one assist (all from set pieces), 18-year-old Bukayo Saka was preferred to save the game ahead of him.

What’s happened? The 24-year-old has played just 58 Premier League minutes out of a possible 360 since his brace against Vitoria in October, and looks completely out of favour.

Adapting to English football is often unforgiving but if you can’t even get onto the pitch – then perhaps that speaks greater volumes.
