Hearts in mouths

During the game, we got an exclusive look into the mind of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as Marcus Rashford went off injured.

It went a little something like this: “oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no oh no … oh no.”

United’s top scorer lasted just 16 minutes against Wolves before giving the dreaded ‘substitution’ hand gesture – and you could feel pure tension oozing from the stands.

Rashford has been nursing back issues since Christmas the decision to play him tonight could come back to bite his manager.

We are yet to gauge the seriousness of the problem but with a trip to Anfield fast approaching, this is far from ideal preparation.

Supporting cast struggle to impress

Daniel James and Mason Greenwood were both handed starts by Solskjaer yet neither player was able to make a significant impact.

James – to his credit – went through twice after exploiting Wolves’ high defensive line, only to be let down by his finishing after firing straight at John Ruddy.

Greenwood was simply anonymous. You cannot doubt his talent, but the 18-year-old looked lost and offered his team-mates little during build up.

Both are young and will go through patches like this. It’s just a shame they couldn’t capitalise on their opportunities.

Wasteful Wolves should feel frustrated

At no point did they pepper Sergio Romero in goal, but Wolves should certainly feel frustrated with their wayward end product at Old Trafford.

Adama Traoré and Pedro Neto had the beating of their full backs on several occasions, only for their final ball (both under and overhit) to lack quality.

Raul Jiménez did his best to replicate Hal Robson-Kanu early on with a beautiful Cruyff turn, sending three defenders flying, with his left-footed strike again disappointing.

Moments to be encouraged by? Absolutely. But it still wasn’t enough.
