Arsenal took the lead at Crystal Palace on Saturday but remain behind the Eagles after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was sent off.

Aubemayang netted the opener but Palace equalised thanks to a deflected Jordan Ayew effort before the Arsenal captain was sent off for a nasty tackle on Max Meyer.

Aubameyang’s goalscoring record

While many of the Arsenal squad have improved under Arteta, they had a low bar. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s improvement is genuinely impressive, given he was already carrying the team.

The Gabonese showcased his fine movement and calm in front of goal yet again to give the Gunners the lead on Saturday. His clipped finish left Vicente Guaita with no chance and was his 14th in the Premier League this season. A third in four games under Arteta. He’s now just three behind Jamie Vardy.

Arsenal’s skipper now has 46 in 71 PL appearances since joining two years ago. Not bad considering the state of the side he’s been in.

They’ll miss him as he serves a ban after his red card.

Time to sell Zaha?

Wilfried Zaha had an afternoon to forget against one of the teams that had courted him in the summer. Arsenal won’t be feeling like they missed out on too much.

The Ivorian international has so often punished Arsenal in recent years but, on this showing, he may not have anything more to give Palace. With Chelsea and Tottenham linked, it might be time to cash in?

The worry is obviously replacing him but his output has been negligible so far this season anyway and even when Palace were on top he didn’t look like making a difference.

Sell, move on, rebuild that attack.

Top four hopes all but dead

With Arsenal looking better under Mikel Arteta, it felt like they still had slim chances of making the top four.

But they dropped two more points on Saturday, could find themselves eight behind Chelsea, and now have to go to Stamford Bridge without Aubameyang.

The forward deserved to see red for his clumsy and dangerous challenge but Arsenal will miss him badly. He’s scored 14 of the team’s 29 Premier League goals this season and they’ll struggle without him.

It doesn’t help when Alexandre Lacazette, who missed a sitter to win all three points, is badly struggling for form.
