Aaron Wan-Bissaka is brilliant

While every City player on the pitch (with the possible exception of Rodri) had extremely below par nights, it was quite the opposite for the side in red.

United were excellent from 1-11 and the pick of the bunch was Wan-Bissaka, who had a tremendous game.

The 22-year-old won the majority of his individual duels with Raheem Sterling and ran a very tight ship down his right hand side all evening.

Even at £50m, Wan-Bissaka’s signing from Crystal Palace looked like an excellent piece of business in the summer and this was the highlight of his United career so far.

He has a very bright future ahead of him.

City deserved to lose and may win nothing this season

That win at Burnley in mid-week felt like a sign that the champions were back in business but it proved to be a false dawn.

Pep Guardiola’s side started the derby quite brightly but an early chance for Daniel James would be a sign of things to come.

As has been the case on too many occasions this season, City failed to get a grip on the midfield and left their back four dangerously exposed.

And when you’ve got a back four which is defending as badly as theirs is at the moment, you’re going to have problems.

Going forward they also struggled to break United’s fierce resistance down and too often resorted to aimless crosses into the box which Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelöf dealt with comfortably.

Not a single City player has had a particularly good season so far and it’s no surprise they’ve already lost four times in the Premier League this season.

If they weren’t already out of the title race before this game, they definitely are now.

Which means it will take winning the Champions League for them to save their season and on this evidence, they’ve got no chance.

United were excellent but they must build on this

Six days ago United were held to a 2-2 draw at home by Aston Villa and the future looked bleak for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Since then, they’ve beaten both Tottenham and City and performed superbly in both games.

Their display at the Etihad was a masterclass in defending deep and counter-attacking effectively and at times their front four were insatiable on the break.

A 3-0 or 4-0 lead at half-time would not have flattered the away side and they did well to see the game out in the second half and survive a late City onslaught.

But the challenge now is whether they can sustain this kind of form. United have blown hot and cold too often in recent years but they undoubtedly have a better squad than their league position suggests.

Next up is Everton at Old Trafford next Sunday and if they win again there, a push for the top four will no longer seem quite so out of the question.
