Tottenham’s early struggles under José Mourinho continued on Saturday as they played out a drab 0-0 draw with Watford at Vicarage Road.

A frustrating afternoon for the north London outfit could have been worse had Troy Deeney not missed a second half penalty but both sides eventually had to settle for a point.

Going nowhere fast

It’s a simple question, some might even call it obvious, but it’s one that needs answering all the same – just what are Tottenham?

José Mourinho has been at Spurs for two months now and despite being in charge for 14 games, who can honestly say that they know how this side is setting up to win football matches?

They’re not a counter-attacking team, they don’t really want to kill you with possession, there doesn’t seem to be any structure to their attacks and the defence is an accident waiting to happen.

It’s a damning indictment on Mourinho that so far this team doesn’t know what their manager wants them to do.

That needs to change very quickly or this ex-serial winner could be thrown on the scrapheap.

A club revived

Watford had spent the entirety of the season in the relegation places before last weekend, and by the looks of things, that’ll be the last time they trouble those positions.

It’s been said here before but it really is worth repeating – Nigel Pearson has done a genuinely stunning job at Vicarage Road and must surely by a Manager of the Season contender should this form and performance level continue.

As opposed to Spurs, this Watford side just look seriously well coached. Every single player in every single position knows his job and is ready to do whatever it takes to make sure it’s done properly.

To do that in such a short space of time is remarkable and deserves shouting from the rooftops.

Kaneo’d

‘Team misses their best player’ shouldn’t really be headline news, but having said that, how much are Tottenham struggling without Harry Kane right now?

It’s been one piece of bad news after another for the England international over this past week with latest suggestions claiming that Kane could now miss the rest of the season with a hamstring pull.

It’s drastically changed Spurs’ transfer plans for January with the north London club now thought to be in the market for potentially two forwards to fill the gap left by the Premier League Golden Boot winner.

And on this evidence, they’ll need those new strikers in sooner rather than later.

Chance after chance was missed on a frustrating afternoon for Spurs, and you couldn’t help wonder that if Kane was fit then Tottenham could have won this by three or more goals.
