Roberto Firmino took Liverpool’s ridiculous unbeaten run to 40 games as they claimed a hard-fought 2-1 win over Wolves.

Jordan Henderson had opened the scoring before Raul Jimenez levelled midway through the first half, but Firmino wriggled his way into space with five minutes remaining to blast home a winner.

Good news, bad news

We’re not sure how many times we’ve written these words this season, but we’re nothing if not predictable.

Once again, Liverpool weren’t at their scintillating best this evening, but as has been their wont this term, they got the job done and claimed another three points to add to their already mind-boggling tally.

As Manchester City have proved already, Molineux is not an easy place to go and get three points from. Nuno’s side are a well-drilled, well-coached side who make every moment of the 90 minutes difficult.

Liverpool though, passed the test and came away from the Black Country with a 16-point lead at the top of the Premier League table.

If the win and the point was the three points good news, there was some bad for Jürgen Klopp to deal with as well though.

Midway through the first half Sadio Mané pulled up midway through a sprint and was quickly substituted with what looked like a hamstring injury.

Here’s hoping it isn’t too serious but as we’ve seen with Harry Kane already this month, hamstrings can be volatile things with varying degrees of recovery.

We’re not saying this is going to derail Liverpool’s title bid, but it would be a shame if the division’s best player was missing for a large part of the remainder of the campaign.

Captain Fantastic

They’re comfortably the best team in the country and by a fair way the best team in Europe.

Their forward line is the envy of the game, they have the world’s best centre-back and are blessed to be marshalled by the game’s number one No.1.

But perhaps nothing better epitomises this Liverpool side and the job Jürgen Klopp has done than the improvement in Jordan Henderson.

18 months ago if you had to pick one weak link in this Reds outfit you would have said Henderson.

Now, arguably, he’s one of the top five defensive midfielders around.

His progression has been remarkable and that is down to his own professionalism, dedication and the hours put in by Klopp and his coaching stadd.

He’s a stunning captain, leading by example and clearly willing to die for the cause, but this season has seen his performances improve leaps and bounds.

It was the England international who opened the scoring tonight and put Liverpool on their way to yet another non-win in this most remarkable of seasons’

All that glitters is gold

Maybe it says something about this season in the Premier League and the way that no team seemingly wants that final Champions League spot.

But on this evidence, and the evidence of the campaign to this point, don’t rule at Wolves being at the top table of European football next season.

This wasn’t just a superb performance, but a blueprint with which other teams should follow when they tale on Liverpool.

The way they shut down the visitor’s channels of attack out wide, never gave the Reds midfield any space and managed to keep a lid on the front three was exceptional.

The Raul Jimenez header in the second half was just pure, unadulterated Wolves and showed off all their best attributes in one sweeping, glorious move.

And it got us wondering: without Europa League football already this season, would Wolves be above Leicester in the table?

Answers on a postcard.
