It was breathless stuff at Emirates Stadium as Arsenal came back from behind (twice) to beat Aston Villa 3-2 on Sunday.
Here’s what we took from the game …
It feels like we flip on this argument every week, but Unai Emery can’t continue managing Arsenal like this.
That first-half was embarrassing. There was no structure, intensity or defensive urgency and his players genuinely looked baffled.
His approach is far too conservative – yet somehow they still leave acres of space in midfield to exploit?
Big individual moments – from the usual suspects – saved him today. On other occasions he might not be so lucky.
When the going gets tough, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang shows up with the goods.
Yet again the Gabonese striker looked peripheral and even missed a great chance. But when that free-kick was placed, there was only going to be one outcome.
That’s 16 goals in his last 16 games now – really stepping up with Alexandre Lacazette injured and Nicolas Pépé still adapting.
Mattéo Guendouzi deserves credit for his second-half performance but Auba is clearly their main man.
Promoted teams are usually tipped to go straight back down, but Aston Villa have once again proven their credentials.
They will be distraught at how the game unfolded and to leave empty handed – but they were the better team for large parts.
Dean Smith’s side were organised, energetic and still able to make telling contributions going forward. They just folded under that late pressure.
John McGinn, Jack Grealish and Tyrone Mings were all brilliant, and there are certainly positives to take.
