Bayern Munich put on a show in the second half on Sunday to beat Hertha BSC in the Olympiastadion.

In doing so, they cut RB Leipzig’s Bundesliga lead back down to four points.

Here’s what we took from the game after goals from Thomas Müller, Robert Lewandowski, Thiago and Ivan Perisic sealed the win.

Bayern’s depth speaks volumes

No Süle, no Hernandez, no Martínez in defence. No Kimmich, no Tolisso. No Coman. Serge Gnabry was only fit enough for the bench.

And Bayern still managed a dominant 4-0 win.

Hansi Flick’s side struggled to create chances in the first half but still could’ve gone into the break ahead if Robert Lewandowski was his usual clinical self.

Instead, they just turned it up a notch in the second half. A wave of constant pressure saw Ivan Perisic squander chances and Hertha defend resolutely until Thomas Müller smashed home. A Robert Lewandowski penalty and a superb Thiago strike followed. Perisic nodded home the fourth.

Bayern still have by far the best squad in Germany and they’ll take some stopping in the second half of the season.

Klinsmann has his work cut out

Hertha got men behind the ball and dug in. And they couldn’t do much else.

The goal that put the hosts behind was the first Hertha had conceded in 332 Bundesliga minutes and Sunday’s defeat was their first since facing Borussia Dortmund in late November.

But did they show enough? Bayern have been gotten at by plenty of sides this season and a team with Dodi Lukebakio, Javairo Dilrosun and Davie Selke could’ve been expected to carry more of a threat on the break.

After a decent start under Klinsmann – Hertha have won two, drawn two, and only lost to Bayern and Dortmund since his arrival – the team are still just two points above a relegation play-off spot.

There’s plenty of work to be done.

Golden boot race goes on

The race for the Torjägerkanone (the Bundesliga top scorer is awarded with a cannon, not a golden boot), couldn’t be closer.

Timo Werner made it 20 goals in 18 Bundesliga appearances on Saturday evening. Lewandowski took his own tally to 20 in 18 on Sunday.

The pair are both chasing history – only Gerd Müller has ever netted 40 in a single Bundesliga campaign.

As they spur each other on to new heights, you’d be safe to bet on the winner taking the league title home with them come May as well.
