Villa learn another difficult Premier League lesson

Aston Villa ended up on the losing side of the first top flight match held at Villa Park in 1,197 days.

Bournemouth were awarded a penalty after just 45 seconds which Josh King duly dispatched, before Harry Wilson scored his first Cherries goal to give Eddie Howe’s side a 2-0 lead.

Douglas Luiz then netted a stunner on his Villa debut in the second half, but it proved to be no more than a consolation.

After losing away at Tottenham last weekend, Dean Smith will be desperately disappointed to come out empty handed from a far more winnable game.

Welcome to big school.

Profligacy and VAR meant Seagulls drop two points

Graham Potter’s Brighton had to settle for a draw despite dominating the shots and possession against West Ham at the Amex.

Summer signing Leandro Trossard thought he’d opened the scoring in the first half only for it to be ruled out correctly by VAR for an offside against Dan Burn.

Javier Hernández then gave the Hammers the lead in the second half. It was the Mexican striker’s 53rd Premier League goal – all of which have come from inside the box.

But four minutes later, Trossard did get his first Brighton goal to earn his side a deserved point.

Toffees hang on to win the Marco Silva derby

A first half goal from Bernard was enough to give Everton their first three points of the season.

And it means Watford have now lost their last five Premier League games dating back to last season, and are yet to score a goal in 2019/20.

The Hornets had chances to equalise in the second half and Danny Welbeck made his debut for the club off the bench, but the hosts held on to move up to fifth in the table.

Perfect Pukki pies off the Mags

Newcastle could be forgiven for losing to Arsenal in last Sunday’s season opener but new manager Steve Bruce can already consider himself under pressure after his side were hammered at Carrow Road.

It’s a day Teemu Pukki will never forget, as he netted his first Premier League hat-trick and became the first Norwich player to do so since Efan Ekoku back in 1993.

His first goal was a particularly good Finnish, if you’ll pardon the pun.

Magnificent Mané energises lethargic Liverpool

A lot of the talk in the build-up to this game revolved around Liverpool’s goalkeeping issues and their potential tiredness following their mid-week Uefa Super Cup exertions.

Jürgen Klopp’s side certainly looked very leggy in what was a poor first half performance but Sadio Mané’s goal on the stroke of half-time gave them a huge boost and they were by far the better team after the interval.

That was Mané’s 16th goal in his last 18 starts for the Reds.

And while Adrián had a good game overall, it was the Spaniard’s blunder which allowed Danny Ings to halve the deficit and put the visitors under huge pressure in the dying minutes of the game.
