The World Anti-Doping Agency have announced that Russia have been handed a four-year ban from major sporting competitions but it will not apply to Euro 2020.
Russia’s flag and anthem will not be permitted at tournaments such as the 2020 Olympic Games and 2022 World Cup, although they do have 21 days to lodge an appeal.
However, athletes who can provide evidence that they were not involved in the recent doping scandal can compete under a neutral flag.
The ban does not apply to next year’s European Championship though, which Russia have already qualified for.
That is due to the fact that the UEFA competition is viewed as a regional tournament and is not defined as a major event organisation, which the ban applies to.
In addition, St Petersburg is also a host city for Euro 2020.
