Schalke have announced the departure of Domenico Tedesco on Thursday evening.
The Bundesliga club are currently 14th in the league table and lost 7-0 to Manchester City in the Champions League on Tuesday.
Former Schalke boss Huub Stevens will take charge of this weekend’s game against RB Leipzig.
The Dutchman has managed the club twice before, from 1996-2002 and then from September 2011 to December 2012.
He has not been in management since he was left TSG Hoffenheim for health reasons just over three years ago.
Tedesco led Schalke to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga last season but their slide down the table sees them just four points clear of the relegation play-off place.
