Liverpool goalkeeper Adrián says he’s “hopeful” of being fit enough to play against Southampton on Saturday.
The Spaniard suffered a freak ankle injury when he was clattered by a pitch invaded after saving the winning penalty in Liverpool’s Uefa Super Cup victory over Chelsea on Wednesday.
There have been suggestions 35-year-old back-up goalkeeper Andy Lonergan will be forced to make his Reds debut at St Mary’s this weekend.
But Adrián has now optimistically allayed those fears.
“Today I feel much better,” the 32-year-old told the club’s official website.
“It was a strange, weird situation because we were celebrating between us and one guy jumped from the crowd and started running.
“I think he slipped in front of us and also the security with him and made me a tackle from the side. It was a bit of a strange situation but I feel much better today and I hope [I’m] ready for tomorrow.”
“I feel mentally ready and I also hope today with the treatment of the ankle it’s going to be much better.
“But I’m very optimistic to start playing tomorrow again.”
