Germany manager Joachim Löw has given a surprise first call-up to 27-year-old striker Mark Uth.

The forward, who has had a slow start to life at Schalke and is yet to score since his summer move from Hoffenheim, has been named in the squad to face Holland and France in the UEFA Nations League.

Explaining the reason for his selection, Löw said: “We’ve been watching Mark Uth for a while now. He is dynamic, fast and offers a goal threat. Now we want to get to know him better.”

Thilo Kehrer continues in defence while left-back Nico Schulz has also been selected. Further up the field, Leroy Sané returns following his World Cup omission while Bayer Leverkusen duo Kai Havertz and Julian Brandt have also been called up.

German regulars Jérôme Boateng, Mats Hummels, Julian Draxler, Toni Kroos, Marco Reus and Thomas Müller all make the team as expected.
