Sarri exited Stamford Bridge earlier this summer after just one season, returning to his homeland to join Juventus.

Chelsea have moved quickly to replace him by bringing Lampard back to the club after he impressed at Derby County.

The 40-year-old, who represented the club for 13 years as a player, brought the Rams to within one game of Premier League promotion last season.

In his debut season in the dugout, Lampard guided Derby to a play-off final with Aston Villa, where they ultimately came up short.

That has been enough to convince the Europa League winners that he is the man to replace Sarri in the Stamford Bridge hot seat.

Lampard is a popular figure among the Chelsea support, having starred for the club from 2001 until 2014.

During his time there, he clocked up almost 650 appearances, won every major honour available to him and became the club’s record goalscorer.
