The former Arsenal and Tottenham defender enjoyed an illustrious playing career, representing England on 73 occasions before he retired in 2012.

Macclesfield are currently bottom of the Football League, sitting 24th in League Two, and sacked former boss Mark Yates on October 8.

The former England defender has recently been working alongside Aidy Boothroyd with the England U-21s, and had been linked with managerial vacancies at Grimsby Town and Oxford United in the past.

Campbell, 44, once described himself as “one of the greatest minds in football” and in 2014, he said the lack of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) managers in English football was a “sad indictment” of the game.
