The English Football League have issued a charge against Derby County for a breach of the competition’s spending rules.

It was an issue that first cropped up almost a year ago, when profitability and sustainability rules were introduced to the Championship and two divisions below.

Due to Derby’s significant spending over the past four years in a bid to reach the top flight, they have now been charged.

The Rams could now face a potential points deduction, similar to the nine-point penalty Birmingham City were served with last season.

It relates to losses in excess of the permitted amounts over the past three years up to the period ending 30 June, 2018.

An independent disciplinary commission will now take on the case before handing down a verdict.

Derby currently sit 17th in the Championship standings, eight points off the play-offs, where they were beaten in the final last year.
