Manchester United are closing in on their first summer signing after Daniel James arrived on Thursday morning to undergo a medical.

Monaco had reportedly made a late play to sign the Swansea City standout, while other Premier League clubs had also been keen.

However, United appear to have won the race for his signature with the Telegraph reporting that he was at Carrington at 7.30am to take part in fitness tests.

It is expected that United will make his signing official for a fee of £18m, covering £15m plus an additional £3m in bonuses.

Both the club and James himself are eager to finalise the deal prior to the 21-year-old linking up with his Wales teammates ahead of Saturday’s clash with Croatia.

James is part of United legend and current Wales boss Ryan Giggs’ squad for both their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Croatia and Hungary.

He will be Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s first signing of a summer window in which there is expected to be an influx of new talent to aid the Norwegian tactician.

James, who came through the youth system at the Liberty Stadium, provided four goals and seven assists in 28 Championship starts last season.
