Championship club Birmingham City have been docked nine points by the English Football League after breaking rules on spending.

The BBC, Sky Sports and the Telegraph all claim the deduction will be made official on Friday.

The punishment will see the club slide from 13th in the table to 18th, just five points clear of the relegation zone.

Birmingham could still appeal the decision.

Birmingham were placed under a transfer embargo last summer after exceeding EFL limits of exceeding losses of £39m over a three-year period.

The Midlands club then ignored the embargo to sign defender Kristian Pedersen for £2m.

According to reports, this latest punishment does not include a transfer embargo for the upcoming summer.

The points deduction is the biggest handed to a team since Leeds United were docked 15 points back in 2007.
