Axel Witsel has arrived at Borussia Dortmund’s camp in Switzerland after agreeing a move to the German giants from Tianjin Quanjian.

The Belgium international has signed a four-year contract and will have his first training session on Monday afternoon after returning to Europe for an undisclosed fee following 18 months in the Chinese Super League.

Dortmund confirmed on their official website that the transfer will be ‘handled formally’ within the next few days via the ‘FIFA TMS’ and explained: “Witsel had activated the exit clause written into his contract with Chinese club Tianjin Quanjian in accordance with its deadline on Sunday. BVB had in turn informed them that they were prepared to meet the transfer fee.”

After representing his country in Russia this summer, Witsel had planned to return to the continent and is delighted to have joined the Bundesliga side.

“After the World Cup, it was my goal to move from China back to Europe,” he said. “I’m totally happy and also proud to be allowed to play for BVB soon.

“After our first conversation, I did not have to think twice, because for me Borussia Dortmund is one of the best clubs on the continent. Honestly, I can not wait to run aground in front of 81,000 people. “

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc added: “For many months we have been keen to oblige Axel Witsel and we are very happy that he has chosen Borussia Dortmund.

“Axel is a player with a great deal of international experience who has all the skills to shape the central BVB midfield: tactical understanding, tackling power, speed, creativity and mentality. ”

Now 29-years-old, Witsel began his career with Standard Liege before spells with Benfica and Zenit St Petersburg proceeded his big money move to Asia. His switch to Dortmund enables him to play in one of Europe’s ‘top five’ leagues for the first time in his career.
