Arsenal have officially announced the sacking of head coach Unai Emery.

Emery replaced long-standing manager Arsène Wenger in 2018, but a run of seven games without a win has cost him his job.

Things started positively under Emery last season, with Arsenal embarking on a 22-game unbeaten run from September to December. However, fans remained unconvinced by his chopping and changing of tactics, personnel and approach.

Arsenal looked set to finish in the top four last season but contrived to throw it away with a 1-1 home draw against Brighton and a 3-2 home defeat to Crystal Palace.

The end of the season was only made worse by a 4-1 defeat to Chelsea in the Europa League final.

Arsenal have won just six of their last 20 Premier League games and are currently eighth in the Premier League. A poor run of results has seen them slip eight points adrift of the top four.

Former Gunners midfielder Freddie Ljungberg will take over on a temporary basis.

Josh Kroenke said:

“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success.”
