Earlier this week, Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum said he would walk off the field if he or a team-mate were ever on the receiving end of racist abuse.

The Dutchman’s defiant statement came after Excelsior striker Ahmad Mendes Moreira was subjected to racist chanting and monkey noises by Den Bosch fans in a second-tier league game in the Netherlands on Sunday.

“If it were to happen to us, I would leave the field right away,” said Wijnaldum.

“This is a social problem, it is something for politics.

“Action must be taken against this type of practice; and not only against racism. A Hitler salute was also issued. How can you do that? That is really disrespectful, that is simply not possible. And it cannot be accepted either.”

On Tuesday, Wijnaldum captained the Netherlands and scored the opening goal in a 5-0 rout of Estonia and he celebrated his goal by holding his arm next to team-mate Frenkie de Jong’s.

The message being sent is that the Netherlands is a multi-cultural place where people of all creeds and colours should be treated with equal respect.

And in football, there is no room for racism.
