New York City FC left their goals late in the game but cast Columbus Crew aside in Yankee Stadium.

Jesús Medina scored the first goal of the game in the 80th minute. USA international goalkeeper Zach Steffen was uncharacteristically poor in distribution, hitting the ball to New York’s Jonathan Lewis.

Lewis hit a shot off the post before collecting the rebound and squaring a pass toward his team-mate Medina. The 21-year old Paraguayan attacking midfielder made no mistake from close range and buried the chance.

After looking like he was going to square a pass, Anton Tinnerholm cleverly beat goalkeeper Steffen to add an insurance goal for the home side.

NYC’s win came after long stretches of frustrating play but the result allays any concerns from the opening 79 score-less minutes. Manager Domènec Torrent can celebrate his 55th birthday in style as his side ended the night level with Atlanta United in both the Eastern Conference standings and the overall Supporters’ Shield race.
