Fluminense defender Gum scored in a goalmouth scramble and Ángel Romero was sent off at the Maracanã.

Centre forward Pedro headed the free kick back across the face of goal where Gum headed towards the net. On the goal line, midfielder Ralf blocked the initial attempt but Gum kept knocking until the ball crossed the line in the 17th minute. Goalkeeper Cássio Ramos tried to make himself big but there was nothing he could do with Gum standing on the doorstep.

Frustration appeared to boil over for the away side at the end of the first half when Ángel Romero saw red. The referee judged Romero had struck Digão in the face and replays confirmed the contact justifying the 42nd minute dismissal.

The home side returned from half-time in control of the match. With a numerical advantage and a lead, Fluminense set out to finish their visitors.

To that end, Cássio was called into action early in the second half. The goalkeeper saved Gilberto’s effort from distance and got up well to stop the rebound from Matheus Alessandro in the 47th minute, though he was ruled offside.

Cássio continued to keep the score close against the odds and in the 75th minute he made a finger-tip diving save on a shot from Junior Sornoza inside the area.

The result moves Fluminense up level on points with Corinthians at 26. The two sides are each 16 points back from the leaders of the Brasileiro Série A São Paulo.
