The 2019 Copa Sudamericana began on Tuesday evening with a 0-0 first-leg draw between Chile’s Unión La Calera and Brazil’s Chapecoense.

Despite only earning 26 per cent possession, Chape managed to keep their opponents off the scoresheet thanks to three saves from João Ricardo.

João Ricardo replaced Chape’s former star goalkeeper Jandrei, who left for Italian Serie A side Genoa in the January window.

The Chileans had a dangerous opportunity in the fourth minute, but goalkeeper João Ricardo saved Marcelo Larrondo’s shot.

Chapecoense responded well in the 27th minute when Renato hit the crossbar.

The second half didn’t see many chances, and it appeared that both sides were satisfied with the result.

The two sides will meet again in Brazil on 19 February.
