Juan Mata scored a 78th-minute equaliser to give Manchester United a draw in the opening game of their US tour.

Mata’s strike canceled out a 59th-minute header by Henry MartĂn which gave Club AmĂ©rica a shock lead in Phoenix, Arizona.

MartĂn found himself in a ton of space in the area and delivered a perfect ball into the top corner to open the scoring.

United looked as if they would be doomed to defeat, however, they were rescued thanks in large part to an unlikely source.

Substitute Tahith Chong is one of United’s many youngsters on tour with the first-team and the 18-year-old made the most of his opportunity. Chong came on for Anthony Martial in the 61st minute and we cannot wait to see more of him. He dazzled with great runs and fantastic crosses.

In the 78th minute, Chong did well to break away from his defender and swing in a cross from the right, which Ander Herrera headed against the far post. The ball squirted out to Mata, whose shot somehow made it through a plethora of players in the box and through the legs of Oscar Jiménez.

With the match being so close to Mexico, it figured to be a top draw, however, due to lack of demand, the 64,300-capacity University of Phoenix Stadium had the entire top tier of the stadium closed. The final attendance was less than 38,000.

United will next lace up their boots on Sunday, when they face Major League Soccer’s San Jose Earthquakes.
