On an extremely wet and rainy night at the Arena Condá, Corinthians escaped with a 1-0 victory over Chapecoense to move even on points with third-placed Santos (41), just eight points behind leaders Flamengo.
Danilo Avelar’s 63rd-minute strike provided the difference as Chapecoense remain in the Brasileirão basement on 15 points, seven points from safety.
The first half proved hard to watch, with chances extremely few and far between. The best opportunity came from Chapecoense in the 28th minute, when Everaldo took a shot from distance and forced Cássio to stretch to punch his effort away for a corner.
Corinthians came out of the gate in the second half thirsty for goals, with Pedrinho and Junior Sornoza both smashing efforts against the crossbar early on.
However, Avelar would finally break the deadlock just after the hour-mark, heading home a Clayson corner.
The best moment of the match came when Cássio made not one, but two point-blank saves to preserve the victory.
Corinthians will now prepare to travel to Porto Alegre to face Grêmio.
