Benfica prevailed 4-3 in penalties after 90 minutes could not separate the two teams in Christian Pulisic’s home state.

Despite an early three-minute brace by Borussia Dortmund’s Maximilian Philipp, the Eagles recovered from a two-goal deficit with second-half goals from AndrĂ© Almeida and Alfa Semedo in their debut at the International Champions Cup in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

Benfica will hope this confidence carries over to their Champions League 3rd qualifying round tie against Turkish giants Fenerbahçe, which will take place on 7 August and 14 August.

The Eagles looked very exposed in defense, which allowed Dortmund to exploit them for a pair of goals about half-way through the first period.

Benfica played very well to start the match, however, Dortmund played spectacular team football inside the box against the run of play to combine for the first goal in the 20th minute, with Philipp sliding in for the finishing touch.

Philipp’s second goal is a contender for the best goal of the night, as Mahmoud Dahoud served up a cheeky lob to the striker, who hit a calmly struck volley past young Mile Svilar.

Benfica came out in the second half much stronger on defence and André Almeida became the beneficiary at the other end, slotting home a cool finish into the far corner to cut the lead in half.

Alfa Semedo scored his first career goal for Benfica to level the score in the 69th minute. Semedo’s original shot got blocked and pinballed between him and his defender until the ball squirted into his path, allowing him to create an excellent finish into the bottom corner.

The match would end level, where Benfica would prevail 4-3 on penalties to claim ICC victory.
